Big Bad Love is a 2001 drama directed and starred in by Arliss Howard. The film is based on a collection of short stories by Larry Brown. The film is set in rural Mississippi. In the film, Leon Barlow (Arliss Howard) is a down on his luck Vietnam veteran. His professional and personal life are a menagerie of failures and rejections. Barlow has an ex-wife, (Debra Winger), that hounds him constantly about child support payments and alimony. His preadolescent son does not want a relationship with him and his young daughter has a tragic disease. He also has a severe alcohol addiction and enough publishing rejection letters to wallpaper a room. To make matters worse, his best confidant, Monroe (Paul Le Mat), is too wrapped up in his own love affair with a local heiress (Rosanne Arquette) to offer him any advice. Despite all his problems, Barlow is determined to keep writing until he becomes a famous published writer. When tragedy strikes, Barlow must make an important decision about his future.
