Big Jim McLain is a political thriller starring John Wayne that takes place after World War II, at the beginning of the Cold War. Two members of the United States Un-American Activities Committee of the House of Representatives, Jim McLain (John Wayne) and Mal Baxter (James Arness), set out to Hawaii to investigate the spread of communism. At the time of this 1952 film, Hawaii was only newly a state and still held a unique mystique in the minds of the American public. The two men launch an investigation which knows no boundaries. They look into insurance fraud, the sabotage of a Navy ship, and the rising labor unions. They get a tip from a reporter that they should be looking for the treasurer of the Communist party, who is said to be hiding out. Their investigation takes them to his doctor's office, where the secretary and McLain begin a romantic relationship. As they get closer to their goal, the nervous Communists resort to drastic means to be rid of them.moreless
