Big Red is a 1962 Disney family adventure film directed by Norman Tokar and is an adaptation of a novel written by Jim Kjelgarrd. In the film, Walter Pidgeon (James Haggin) is a wealthy man who wants to start breeding champion dogs. To begin his endeavor, he purchases Big Red (Red Aye Scraps), a beautiful Irish Setter who was the recent champion at the Montreal Kennel Club dog show. Walter is not interested in bonding or caring for the dog, so he hires ten-year-old orphan, Gilles Payant (Rene Dumont) to handle the dog. Gilles and the dog immediately bond, despite Walter's instructions that they do not. Slowly, Big Red begins to lose interest in his training and reverts to a more natural role for a dog. This change in behavior angers Walter and he attempts to sever the relationship between Big Red and Gilles. Can Walter destroy the bond between the two?
