Movie Summary

Billy Elliot is a dramatic film directed by Stephen Daldry that centers on eleven-year-old Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell), a young motherless boy whose love of dance clashes with his rough and tumble coal-mining father, Jackie (Gary Lewis), and brother, Tony (Jamie Draven), both of whom want Billy to take boxing lessons. As the 1984-85 UK miners' strike hits the entire town and displaces a local ballet class, Billy finds himself drawn away from the ring and onto the floor as the ballet teacher, Georgia Wilkinson (Julie Walters) thinks Billy has a talent for it, even to go to the Royal Ballet School in London. Billy secretly prepares to audition but when his brother becomes involved with the reactive striking miners and gets arrested, ruining his chances as Georgia shows up to reveal his lessons, his father demands he stop dancing. Having lost his chance, Billy has to fight for his right to dance and a life outside the mining town. Nominated and awarded multiple awards, including British Independent Film Awards for Best British Independent Film and Best Newcomer for Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot is a heartwarming gem of what it takes to grasp your destiny.moreless
