Bird of Paradise / The Lady Refuses is a set of two "pre-code Hollywood" films from the early thirties. Bird of Paradise stars Joel McCrea as a handsome young man who falls overboard from a yacht. He is saved from drowning by the gorgeous Polynesian Luana (Dolores del R''o). The two fall in love and envision a beautiful life together, but inescapable tradition threatens their happiness. This chronicle of their doomed romance includes a famous skinny dipping scene, which created a scandal when the film was first released. The Lady Refuses takes place in London. It stars Gilbert Emery as the wealthy Sir Gerald Courtney who hires a prostitute, June (Betty Compson), to lure his wayward son Russell (John Darrow) out of a relationship with a gold digger, Berthine Waller (Margaret Livingston).
