Black Adder's A Christmas Carol is a comic 1988 holiday special, in which Rowan Atkinson ("Mr. Bean") brings his beloved Black Adder character to the classic Charles Dickens tale. The Black Adder character was first introduced to audiences in the British series, The Black Adder (1982-3), as a clever and conniving anti-hero from a British dynasty. In each new production, Atkinson brought the same premise and character to different historical periods, always playing a descendant of the same family line. In this holiday treat, Atkinson reverses the usual story by making this Blackadder, a kindly Victorian shopkeeper named Edmund. Instead of being shown the errors of his way, the Spirit of Christmas (Robbie Coltrane, Hagrid from the "Harry Potter" films) encourages him to discover his ruthlessness and enjoy the pleasures of being mean. This funny and iconoclastic comedy also features respected British actors Hugh Laurie ("House"), Jim Broadbent "Moulin Rouge") and Miranda Richardson ("The Crying Game") in delightfully comedic performances.
