Black Beauty is a an adaptation of Anna Sewell's 1877 classic novel by the same name which is one of the best-selling books of all time. This 1994 film is the fifth adaptation of the classic story starring Andrew Knott, Sean Bean and David Thewlis. The story is narrated from the point of view of horse Black Beauty himself. Set in England, Black Beauty recounts the details of the beginning his life as a carefree colt on a beautiful farm, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London, to his happy retirement in the country. Along his journey he has many owners and tells about his perceptions of the humans he meets. Some people were kind, caring and compassionate, and others proved to be cruel and crude. Vulnerable Black Beauty was often placed in life-threatening situations and faced many challenges. Stories from Black Beauty's life contain lessons and morals related to the kindness, sympathy, and understanding of the treatment of horses.
