Black Book is a 2006 dramatic thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven. Beautiful Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten) has had her life violently and darkly disrupted by the horrors of World War II. While attempting to escape from the Nazi presence in her native Holland, the young Jewish woman soon becomes the sole survivor of a suprise attack. Devastated but newly inspired to fight back, Rachel offers her talents to a group of Dutch resistance fighters. When the leader, Gerben Kuipers (Derek de Lint), realizes that his son, Tim (Ronald Armbrust), has been taken captive, he asks Rachel to carry out a highly dangerous mission. She must pose as a German woman, taking the name Ellis de Vries, and become close to German Captain Ludwig M''ntze (Sebastian Koch), in the hopes of freeing Tim. Rachel does not expect to actually develop feelings for Ludwig, but as she moves deeper into a web of deceit and betrayal, she finds that she is losing touch with her true loyalties.moreless

Moves like an express train across almost 2½ hours without any sense of rush and with strong, empathetic characters etched en route.

Black Book works only if you take it for the pulpiest of fiction, not a historical gloss, its stated claims to "true events" notwithstanding.
