Black Irish is a 2007 coming-of-age drama about two very different brothers growing up in the Irish-American neighborhood of South Boston. Sixteen-year-old Cole McKay (Michael Angarano) has dreams of becoming a priest but then his sister, Kathleen (Emily Van Camp), gets pregnant. His parents, Desmond (Brendan Gleeson) and Margaret (Melissa Leo), decide to pull Cole out of private school so they can pay for Kathleen to go to a home for unwed mothers. Cole gets sent to public school along with his older brother, Terry (Tom Guiry), who has begun a hard-living lifestyle of drinking, drugs and petty crime. Their father, also a heavy drinker, stays detached from the family, while their mother struggles to keep the household running. Cole wants to rise above the bleak circumstances of his home life and transfers his ambitions to winning the state championships with the school's basketball team. At the same time, Terry wants to bring his too-good brother down to his level.
