Black Narcissus is a 1947 drama directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. High on the Himlayan mountains, isolated from the world they once knew, a small convent of Anglican nuns struggles to adjust to the beautiful but strange new world. In the lush surroundings, the sisters try to focus on their mission to bring the word of God to the natives, but instead find themselves seduced and fascinated by the dreamlike beauty of the Himayalas. Sister Superior Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) finds herself haunted by the sensual memories of a failed romance in her native home of Ireland. Tensions rise with the appearance of Dean (David Farrar), a friendly British agent who promises to keep an eye on the nuns. Tentative sparks fly between Dean and Clodagh, leading to discontent among the other nuns. Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron) watches the two especially closely, her mental health slipping as jealousy overtakes her. When death and romance start to infiltrate the quiet walls of the convent, Sister Ruth reaches a tragic breaking point.moreless
