Black Orchid is a British murder mystery directed by Charles Saunders and filmed in 1953. It's the somewhat complex tale of Dr. John Winnington (Ronald Howard). John's wife Sophie (Mary Laura Wood) is a bitter, manipulative woman who is very cruel to him. By contrast Sophie has a sweet, beautiful younger sister Christine (Olga Edwardes) with whom John falls in love. John and Christine have an affair and when Sophie finds out she divorces him. John wants to marry Christine but discovers it is against the law to marry his ex sister-in-law. The only way he can marry Christine is if Sophie dies. Black Orchid turns into a classic whodunit when Sophie turns up dead and John, the obvious suspect, is thrown into prison for the crime. After the police refuse to investigate further, Christine partners with John's best friend Eric (John Bentley) to find the real killer and clear John's name. Black Orchid is packed full of twists, turns, and the cliche red herrings that thrill mystery fans.moreless
