That book was by Tarzana California based American SF writer Larry Niven and was called The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton, and was about a detective in the future called, you got it-Gil Hamilton. An amazing book I thought and when I saw this film years ago it made me think of the book-which had preceded the Blade Runner film by several years. Such is the case with many 'masterpieces of modern SF are often only 'masterpieces' because they are basically redone work by others=that is to say the groundwork was already laid out by SF writers. I did think the Blade Runner movie became boring midway through, but hardcore fans would no doubt disagree. Syd Mead, a Chicago based graphic artist/futurist, did a great job of the films futuristic visuals.
