Blindness is a 2008 apocalyptic thriller about a virus that causes blindness. Director Fernando Meirelles ("City of God") uses an anonymous city and unnamed characters to create a bleak environment. Residents of a major metropolis begin experiencing sudden blindness. A doctor (Mark Ruffalo) treats a few of these patients but cannot understand the cause of the condition. He comes home to his wife (Julianne Moore) and then loses his own sight. In another part of town, a woman (Alice Braga) picks up a bartender (Gael Garc''a Bernal). After a romp in a hotel room, he leaves and she wakes up with no sight. Throughout the city, quarantine workers gather up the unlucky carriers and place them in a remote hospital ward. Curiously, the doctor's wife retains her sight, but she feigns blindness so that she can go with him. Once there, the bleak hospital quickly fills with every type of citizen, similarly struck blind. As time passes, food and other services stop coming. The guards and orderlies have seemingly disappeared, and the blind hospital residents begin to fight one another for survival.moreless
