Boys Don't Cry is a heart wrenching romantic drama that has been cited as one of the most controversial and talked-about films of 1999. At the 72nd Academy Awards in 2000 star Hilary Swank was awarded an Oscar for Best Actress and co-star Chlo' Sevigny was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Hilary Swank portrays Brandon Teena a young female-to-male non-operative transgender man once know as Teena Renae Brandon. Brandon is harassed when his secret is revealed and he is forced to leave his home and move to Falls City, Nebraska. Brandon becomes the popular new guy in this tiny town and befriends ex-convicts John Lotter (Peter Sarsgaard) and Tom Nissen (Brendan Sexton III), and their friends Cadance (Alicia Goranson and Lana Tisdel (Chlo' Sevigny). Brandon enjoys being 'one of the guys' and spends his time drinking, swearing, bumper surfing, and charming young women. Lana forms a relationship with Brandon but if unknowing of his previous life as female. Tom and John discover Brandon's secret after reading a newspaper article about Brandon that refers to him as his birth name, Teena. Brandon's story come to a sad end with betrayal, humiliation and rape.moreless
