Branded is a 1950 western about an outlaw that pretends to be a rich couple's long lost son to swindle a reward out of them. Mr. (Charles Bickford) and Mrs. (Selena Royle) Lavery have been heartbroken for years over their missing son, who was kidnapped as a baby. Every year they offer $100,000 for his return, and when the evil P. Jefferson Leffingwell (Robert Keith) hears about this, his wheels start turning. He convinces fellow lawbreaker Choya (Alan Ladd) to pose as the couple's son, getting a tattoo to resemble the young boy's birthmark, and showing up on their doorstep. The plan goes off without a hitch, but when Choya is showered with the love and affection he never received from his family, he has a change of heart about the scam and tells the Laverys who he really is. The family is mortified and disgusted with the news, and Choya decides the only way he can make things right is to find their real son, but the journey proves to be a difficult one, as Leffingwell and the roving bandit that has raised the boy have no intention of sending him back to his rightful place with his family. Rudolph Mat' directs this star vehicle for Ladd, about a bad man with good heart.moreless
