Movie Summary

Director:
Jonathan Mostow
Released:
1997
Rating:
R
Breakdown is a crime drama that examines one man's unyielding search for his wife after she is kidnapped while on a road trip. Jeff and Amy Taylor (Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan) plan on starting a new life in California, but unfortunately while in transit their car breaks down in the Arizona desert. A passing trucker offers to give Amy a ride to bring help, but when she does not return Jeff begins to suspect something is wrong. With nobody to rely on but himself, he must investigate the incident and discover the true whereabouts of his missing spouse. Although Jeff can be abrasive at times, he is intelligent in the way he goes about his search. When he eventually confronts the same trucker that offered to give Amy a ride, he denies ever seeing either of them. The police are unable to help as there is no evidence of foul play.

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

His Breakdown is a tough, vigorous exercise in pure action, shot with throwback expertise and, most refreshingly, without special effects.

    Los Angeles Times Jack Mathews

Mostow, with his first feature, has made such a convincing, fast-paced, edge-of-the-seat thriller that you'd swear you'd never seen anything quite like it.

    Variety Todd McCarthy

In his bigscreen feature debut, director and co-writer Jonathan Mostow displays real flair for visceral cinema while adroitly sidestepping many of the usual tripwires of this sort ...
