Breaking Glass is a 1980 British feature film chronicling the crossroads of an aspiring band manager and a struggling singer. The movie stars Kate (Hazel O'Conor) as the discontented but talented singer. It also stars her manager, Danny (Phil Daniels), who has quit his promotion job with another agency in order to be Kate's agent. The film depicts the corruption and censorship of the music industry; at the beginning of the film, Danny is asked by his first manager to skew the charts by buying one record over and over again. When Kate's band finally becomes popular, Danny turns the tables around and extorts his old manager into attending and endorsing Kate's band, Breaking Glass. But this pushes Kate into mainstream radio, where she finds her liberal and anarchist work censored and distorted. This movie is a detailed exposition of the cultural strife in England in the 1980s, and how two aspiring musicians ultimately cope with their polarized and corrupt environment.moreless
