Breathless is a 1960 French romantic, crime drama directed by Jean-Luc Godard. In this film, Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a sociopathic thief who is obsessed with American movies. In the midst of stealing a car, Poiccard is pursued by a motorcycle cop. The thief and the cop have a confrontation, and Michel murders the policemen. The police immediately begin a manhunt for the cop killer, and Michel turns to his American girlfriend, Patricia Franchini (Jean Seberg). Patricia is a journalism student who sells newspapers in the town square, but she has no idea that authorities are searching for her boyfriend. While hiding out with his girlfriend, Michel arranges to get a loan from a thug he knows and plans to escape with Patricia to Rome, Italy. Eventually, Michel explains his situation to Patricia and encourages her to flee the country with him. Michel is looking for his Hollywood getaway like he sees in the movies he loves.
