Brick is an independent 2005 crime thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) as a lonely teenager trying to solve the mystery of his dead ex-girlfriend. Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) receives a cryptic message from his former girlfriend, Emily (Emilie De Ravin). Emily says she is in trouble. Brendan, who still loves her, wants to help her any way he can. Two days later, he finds her corpse dumped in a tunnel. Brendan decides to find out what happened to her on his own and hides her body, only trusting his friend, "The Brain" (Matt O'Leary) with his secret investigation and plot for revenge. He follows the strange clues that Emily left him which lead to a high school clique centered on Laura (Nora Zehetner), a rich girl who surrounds herself with a dangerous crowd of drug users and dealers. Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

Johnson has taken a well-worn, much-revised genre, adapted to what's become a clichéd setting and transcended both in the process.

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

The story, while derivative, isn't half bad, and the picture gains in finesse and confidence to the point where Johnson more or less pulls off his peril-fraught exercise.

  • 50

The New York Times Stephen Holden

It's all so seamy, sordid, lurid and shocking! And dull, despite a noirish gloss of wide-angle cinematography and a jaundiced, smoggy color scheme.
