Bride of Vengeance is a lush 1949 black-and-white film that tells an intensely dramatic story of politics and love. Lucretia Borgia (played by Paulette Goddard) is a bride who thinks that her new husband, Alfonso (John Lund) is a ruthless murderer who killed her first husband and married her to unite the two kingdoms of Venice and Ferrara. On her wedding night, Lucretia plans to exact her revenge and murder her evil new husband by poisoning him. She discovers, however, that everything is not as it seems. In fact, to her surprise, she discovers that she may have romantic feelings for her husband. Macdonald Carey plays the hard-hearted Cesare Borgia, the bride's brother who orchestrates the marriage. Beyond the drama of the marriage, there is a military subplot: will Alfonso finish building an immense cannon in time to fend off the invading armies of Cesare, his wife's evil brother? In the end, Alfonso wins over Lucretia. She decides that she will spare Alfonso's life and return to him.moreless
