Adapted from a Noel Coward play by the author himself, Brief Encounter is a classic 1945 British film directed by David Lean. Starring Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, and Stanley Holloway, the film tells the story of Laura Jesson (Johnson) as she falls in love with Alec Harvey (Howard), a doctor who consults at a nearby hospital once a week. Laura, however, is a married suburban housewife, while Alec is married with two children. When the romance between Laura and Alec blossoms into regular meetings, they fear that their love has grown too strong. They arrange for the two of them to share a romantic evening together in a friend's apartment, but the unexpected arrival of said friend makes them both realize the dangers of their affair. Knowing they must say goodbye to each other, Alec and Laura plan one final moment together. Brief Encounter is listed as one of the greatest British films of all time and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.moreless
