Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a 2009 dark comedy directed by John Krasinski. Based on the writings of novelist David Foster Wallace, the film follows Sara Quinn (Julianna Nicholson), an earnest graduate student who is determined to get to the bottom of the male mind. Her plan is to interview a series of anonymous men, known simply as "Subjects." Since she recently broke up and is suffering emotionally from her failed relationship, Sara finds herself having a personal reaction to the interviews. Subject #14 (Ben Shenkman) has decided that women are to blame for everything that goes wrong in his life. Subject #30 (Timothy Hutton) is in a seemingly happy relationship, but might hide some ugly secrets about his attitude toward his wife. Subject #42 (Frankie Faison) still struggles to understand his father's actions and his own masculinity. Sara tries to piece together the insights offered during these brief interviews and understand what makes men behave the way they do.moreless
