In a world at war and an empire torn by revolution, a beautiful, idealistic aristocrat risks all for the love of a British Agent. Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1917. The Allies are in danger of losing World War I, and Russia's 1,000-year-old dynasty tetters on the edge of revolution. Young Elena Moura (Kay Francis) works against her class and position to help effect change in her beleagured country, but she falls in love with the dashing British diplomat, Stephen Locke (Leslie Howard), who saves her life during a street riot. Now, Elena must chose between her love for a man working to keep Russia in the fight against the Germans and her country, which has suffered so much from the war.
