1996
Rating:

Broken Arrow is an action film about a rogue Air Force pilot who steals several nuclear warheads in an effort to blackmail the U.S. government. Major Vic Deakins (John Travolta) is regarded throughout the Air Force as one of its top pilots. During a routine training machine with Captain Riley Hale (Christian Slater), Deakins appears to lose his mind when he ejects Hale from the prototype stealth bomber they are flying in and releases the nuclear bombs. Leaving the bomber to crash, Deakins ejects from it, too. When Riley lands on the ground, he meets Park Ranger Terry Carmichael (Samantha Mathis), and the two of them set out to find Deakins. They eventually catch up with him and learn that he is threatening to blow up the bombs in a civilian area unless the government meets his price. Will Hale and Carmichael stop Deakins before he can unleash his evil plan?

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Woo has turned out a slick piece of business, filled with explosions and assorted acts of violence brought off with considerable movie-making skill.

  • 70

The New York Times Janet Maslin

Mr. Woo orchestrates his giddy, daring stunts on a newly spectacular level. There's plenty of physical audacity on screen.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

One fundamental problem with the movie is that John Travolta is seriously miscast as a nuclear terrorist. Say what you will about the guy, he doesn't come across as a heavy.
