Broken Lance features Matt Deveraux, a man who has has made his fortune as a cattle baron on the open range. He and his sons are known as fierce, hardworking and shrewd businessmen. When Matt (Spenser Tracy) discovers that a copper mine is polluting the stream that runs across his ranch and killing his cattle, he organizes a posse and leads a raid against the mine. The mine suffers heavy damage in the raid. When the law arrives at Matt's ranch to arrest those responsible his son Joe (Robert Wagner) takes full responsibility for the incident at the mine, in order to protect his father. When released from prison, he learns that his brothers took advantage of their father's weakness during his absence, ultimately resulting in a stroke which took their father's life. Driven mad with grief, Joe plots revenge. His mother, known only as Senora (Katy Jurado) must stop the madness before it is too late and the Deveraux family is destroyed forever.moreless
