Buchanan Rides Alone is a western about a gunslinger who encounters more than he bargained for as he passes through a small California town. Tom Buchanan (Randolph Scott) is fresh out of a trip to Mexico with enough gold to finally snatch up that patch of West Texas he's always craved. His mind is set upon simply returning home to a simple life, but when he wanders into the town of Agry, California, the townspeople make things far from from simple. The small township is run by Judge Simon Agry (Tol Avery) and Sherriff Lew Agry (Barry Kelley), who learn that Buchanan is holding gold in his gun belt, and seize it. As if he wasn't pitted enough against the Agry family, matters become much worse when Buchanan, trying to break up a fight between the judge's son and a young Mexican man, kills the young Agry fellow, and the entire town runs after him and his new allies, at full speed. Overturned tables and flying gunpowder are in ample supply in this charming 1958 western from director Budd Boetticher, which shows that none of us ride alone, no matter how hard we try.moreless
