Bull Durham is a 1988 sports comedy starring Kevin Costner as Crash Davis, a veteran catcher on the struggling Durham Bulls baseball team. He is sent down to the minors to work with Ebby Laloosh (Tim Robbins) a hot-headed young pitcher. The film also stars Susan Sarandon as Annie, a woman who chooses one Durham Bull player to sleep with and mentor each season. She chooses Ebby since Crash apparently has no interest and they each have a hand in mentoring the young player. Annie teaches Ebby to think in different ways while Crash instructs him not to think at all. Crash also tells Ebby about what it is really like to play major league baseball, which he briefly did. Eventually Crash and Annie get closer while her and Ebby are still a couple. This causes friction both off and on the field. Ebby eventually blossoms into a great pitcher and is called up to the majors. Since Ebby no longer needs guidance, Crash is released from the team. Crash is at first jealous, but eventually forgives Ebby and is signed by another minor league team where he breaks the home run record. He returns to Durham where he and Annie decide to live their life together.

A treasure of a movie because it knows so much about baseball and so little about love.

    Variety

A fanciful and funny bush league sports story where the only foul ball is its overuse of locker-room dialog.

Dialogue that strains to be colorful, indiscriminately piled-on pop songs, plot developments that aren't followed through on, and minor aspects of motivation that are never known. ...
