Burnt by the Sun is a 1994 Russian film about a retired Colonel named Sergei Kotov who has found a happy life for himself in 1936, living in the country with his beautiful young wife and their daughter. Colonel Kotov's comfortable twilight years are interrupted when a man on a quest for vengeance arrives with a secret mission to arrest the Colonel in anticipation of Joseph Stalin's upcoming Great Purge. Nikita Mikhalkov plays Colonel Kotov, whose work in the Russian Civil War made him a national hero. He lives with his wife Maroussia, played by Ingeborga Dapkunaite, and their daughter Nadia, in Maroussia's family's country dacha. Mitya, played by Oleg Menshikov, arrives under pretense of a friendly visit, but quickly reveals his hidden agenda. As a member of the Secret Police, he has found a political avenue to exact revenge on the Colonel, who Mitya blames for his misfortunes. Burnt by the Sun is a gripping piece of historical fiction, and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.moreless
