Bushwacker, formerly called The Rebel, is a 1951 drama directed by Rod Amateau. In the film, the Civil War has just ended and Confederate soldier Jeff Waring (John Ireland) is moving west to get away. Due to all the killing he experienced during the war, he has vowed that he will never use a weapon again. He arrives in Independence, Missouri and decides to make this town his home. It does not take him long to realize that Artemus Taylor (Lon Chaney, Jr.) and his two goons Sam (Lawrence Teirney) and Cree (Jack Elam) are the town bullies. They are forcing settlers off of their land, so Taylor can sell it to the railroad company, which plans on bringing a train to their town. With memories of the Civil War fresh in his mind and the promise to himself never to use a weapon again, Jeff must rethink his philosophy and determine if some things are worth fighting for.
