Bye is a PBS documentary to raise awareness about the urgent and growing public health crisis of autism. Nearly one in every 110 children have the disorder and low-income families are more affected than other families. Without proper awareness and early diagnosis, effective treatment is nearly impossible. While the media has increased public attention about autism, little has been shown about the impact on families who do not have the means or insight to help their children who live with the disorder. Bye features Jayden, a 2 1/2- year-old boy who has been diagnosed with autism. As Jayden begins his first months of school, he shows a mixture of shyness, a desire to work hard and an enjoyment of the classroom. The documentary depicts his challenges and successes as his teachers help him achieve small milestones including responding to his name, pointing to things he wants and learning to say the word "bye."
