California Firebrand is a 1948 film directed by Philip Ford. It follows the story of cowboy Monte Hale (Hale), who is on his way to Gunnison, California to visit his uncle, with his partner Chuck Waggoner (Paul Hurst). They find an unconcious rider with a telegram in his pocket. It is the ruthless outlaw Gunsmoke Lowery (Daniel M. Sheridan) who is called into town by corrupt mayor Lance Dawson (Douglas Evans) to take part in his land grabbing affairs as the town's sheriff. Monte takes the telegram and continues his ride to Gunnison. They meet Joyce Mason (Lorna Gray) who tells them that Monte's uncle has been killed while trying to organize ranchers and miners against the cruel mayor. When the cowboy arrives in town he assumes Lowery's identity and becomes the new town sheriff. Mayor Dawson tries to use him in his dirty business against a family of mine owners.
