California Joe is a 1943 Western starring Don 'Red' Barry. The film is set just after the Civil War's end and centers around a villainous group of former Confederate soldiers who are bent on turning the state of California into its own, independent nation. Lieutenant Joe Weldon (Don Barry), a spy for the Union Army, receives orders to go undercover to foil their plan. But Lt. Weldon is not alone; rather, he is joined by his friends Tumbleweed Smith (Wally Vernon) and "Melbourne" Tommy Atkinson (Terry Frost) in his mission. The trio of compatriots head west to pose as unsuspecting gold rush miners, hoping to ferret out the Confederate organization from the inside out. Lt. Weldon soon finds himself boot-deep in conspiracy, but begins to wonder whether the Confederates are the true villains, or if they're simply pawns in a bigger game. With Wally Vernon in his typical comic relief role coupled with Don Barry as the idealistic Western hero, California Joe is a classic American Western.moreless
