The newspaper's editor (Lee J. Cobb) assigns reporter P.J. McNeal (James Stewart) to investigate Mrs. Wiecek's claims. After digging into the facts of the case, McNeal believes that Wiecek is innocent of the murder. He is willing to put his career on the line against the police and the attorney's office. Not wanting to be proven wrong, they meet him with resistance at every turn, but McNeal is determined to fight for Frank Wiecek until the bitter end.
