Candyman is a horror film directed by Bernard Rose, based on a short story by horror pro Clive Barker, that revolves around Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen), a beautiful graduate student researching urban legends, as she learns that sometimes an urban legend is not that much of a legend but fact. As Helen delves deeper into the local myths, she becomes intrigued by one called Candyman, an educated and artistic former slave named Daniel Robitaille (Tony Todd) whose relationship with a white daughter of a powerful man led to his brutal death with his hand sawed off and strung up to be attacked by bees. The legend says if you say his name five times into a mirror, Candyman will appear with a hook in hand and covered in bees to exact revenge but when Helen tries it and continues her skepticism, Candyman takes it upon himself to do his worst to prove his existence to not only Helen but also the town of Cabrini-Green. Of course, legends are only powerful in those who believe it.moreless
