Released:
1991
Rating:
R

Cape Fear (1991) is director Martin Scorsese's furious remake of the 1962 noir classic about a convicted rapist seeking revenge on the attorney who once defended him. After 14 years in prison, Max Cady (Robert DeNiro) wants to teach public defender Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) a lesson. Bowden failed to use a key piece of evidence in his long-ago trail, and the psychotic Cady has made Bowden, along with his wife Leigh (Jessica Lange) and teen daughter Danielle (Juliette Lewis) the focus of all his outrage at the world. As Cady closes in, the seemingly picture-perfect Bowdens begin to reveal the dysfunction at the family's core. Scorsese keeps the pace fast and suspenseful, with dashes of brutality and sexuality best suited to mature viewers. The impressive cast gives the film emotional depth, with DeNiro giving one of his most mesmerizing and frightening performances. Movie buffs will also enjoy catching the original "Cape Fear" co-stars Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck in small but eye-catching cameo roles.
