Movie Summary

Thom Eberhardt

Captain Ron follows the Harvey family as they try to sail their new yacht home from a Caribbean island. Martin Harvey (Martin Short) inherited the yacht that was once owned by Silver Screen Hollywood star Clark Gable. If he can get it to Miami in good shape, the family stands to make a small fortune. But the midwestern Harveys know nothing about sailing on the open sea and they turn to Captain Ron (Kurt Russell), an experienced sailor with a checkered past. Martin convinces his wife, Katherine (Mary Kay Place), to take the kids out of school. Son Ben (Benjamin Salisbury) is 11 and daughter Caroline (Meadow Sisto) is 16 and involved with a boy the family hopes she'll forget after a trip to the tropics. Captain Ron is fiercely loyal to his boss, Martin, but Martin is jealous of how his family is becoming close to the sailor. His anger with Captain Ron leads to complications on the trip, including mistaking islands and one member of the group being captured by guerrillas. Thom Eberhardt directs the 1992 comedy.

    Chicago Sun-Times

This is a nice enough fantasy, but the premise of a dream gone sour is stale. And the Hollywood happy ending seems predictable pretty early in the movie. [22 Sep 1992, p.33]

Captain Ron is tropical and picturesque. But like a scenic island postcard, it has little scope or depth. [23 Sep 1992, p.E4]
