Car of the Future: Engineering for the Environment chronicles the efforts of two radio co-radio hosts, Tom Magilozzi and Ray Magliozzi, to find or possibly refurbish the ideal car, as Tom's adored ride has finally come to see its last days. Tom and Ray's quest to find this perfect car leads them to discover all sorts of out of the ordinary eco-vehicles such as electric cars that charge like a common household appliance to cars that run on ethanol and prototype biofuels that run efficiently and are safe for the environment. Their travels also lead them to see the other, more glamorous, side of the automobile industry as they arrive at a prestigious auto-show in Detroit and long after the mouth-watering show vehicles. Their unique brand of serious investigation into a modern-day crisis combined with the brotherly wisecracking comedy exclusive to their radio show, "Car Talk", provides a brilliant insight into the search for the perfect ride.
