Career Girl is a 1944 musical directed by Wallace Fox. Joan Terry (Frances Langford) may come from the humble Midwest, but she has always dreamed of finding fame and fortune in the most glamorous city on Earth. She arrives in New York ready to do anything to make it as a star. She already has had to make a sacrifice, leaving behind her dedicated boyfriend and would-be husband, James (Craig Woods). In New York, Joan quickly has to adapt to the steep prices. She accepts a room at a boarding home that is filled with other hopefuls and aspiring stars. The landlord is affectionately known as "Pop" (Alec Craig), and he keeps an eye out for the young women as they head to one audition after another. Some of Joan's new friends include Sue Collins (Ariel Heath), Glenda Benton (Iris Adrian), Polly (Renee Helms) and Ann (Lorraine Miller). The girls decide that Joan has the most potential and should become a stage manager for the others, helping them book jobs. However, Joan is not sure she is up to the challenge, especially with her own stardom looking uncertain and James showing up on the doorstep.moreless
