Career is the story of friends Sam Lawson (Anthony Franciosa) and Maurice "Maury" Novak (Dean Martin) trying to make it in the theater. They put on small productions hoping to get noticed by the big-time producers on Broadway. The film follows the two as they fight for bit roles and mount performances for small audiences. However, in their quest for success, the two friends become estranged when Maury refuses to cast Sam in his new show. Just as Sam is to be cast in a new television show, producers delve into his past. They believe the small theater where he, and his already blacklisted friend Maury, once worked put on subversive plays and musicals. Instead of landing a starring role, Sam is blacklisted preventing him from pursuing his lifelong dream. Nominated for three Academy Awards and written by blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, Career is a damning exploration of the artistic and human toll of the Hollywood blacklist.
