Carefree is a movie about singer Amanda Cooper (Ginger Rogers), a radio star who is engaged to Stephen Arden (Ralph Bellamy). Stephen is independently wealthy and spends much of his time at his country club. After Amanda breaks off their engagement for the third time, Stephen visits his friend, psychoanalyst Dr. Tony Flagg (Fred Astaire), to get advice about his floundering relationship. Stephen persuades Amanda to see Dr. Flagg, and as the two get to know each other, Dr. Flagg senses that Amanda is becoming interested in him. In desperation, Dr. Flagg uses hypnosis to strengthen Amanda's feelings for Stephen and when this doesn't work, he resorts to several other comical remedies. Amanda continues to fall in love with Dr. Flagg and eventually their relationship deepens. Produced in 1938, this was the eighth of ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together and features music composed by Irving Berlin.
