Carlito's Way: Rise to Power is a direct-to-video prequel to the Brian De Palma crime classic Carlito's Way starring Al Pacino. In the 60's, Puerto Rican Carlito Brigante gangster (assayed this time by Jay Hernandez, Hostel), African-American Earl (Mario Van Peebles, Jaws 4: The Revenge) and Italian thug Rocco (Michael Kelly, Dawn of the Dead) really hit it off while doing time in gladiator academy. Upon release, Rocco shepherds a heroin business with one of the families of the Italian Mafia lorded over by Artie Badalato Sr. (Burt Young, Rocky). Carlito soon brokers a deal with lord Leroy "Hollywood Nicky" Barnes (P.Diddy) to secure an area where the trio could operate in his neighborhood and soon the three friends become a powerful force in the crime business. This film, like the first, was based on material from Edwin Torres's two novels After Hours and Carlito's Way. Ironically, the previous film was essentially based on After Hours, while this one ostensibly takes its narrative from the latter. The prequel was written and directed by Michael Bregman (Table One), son of the previous film's powerhouse producer Martin Bregman (Scarface, Sea of Love).moreless
