Carmen is a romantic drama film directed by Vicente Aranda, based on the novella of the same name by Prosper Merimee, inspired by a story by the Countess of Montijo. Prosper Merimee (Jay Benedict) had been traveling through Spain when he discovers the passionate tale of Carmen (Paz Vega) and Jose (Leonardo Sbaraglia). Carmen was a beautiful, feisty, and impulsive factory worker, willing to do anything in her power to survive, whose dark enigmatic and sexual presence could drive any man crazy. When the very proper young soldier Jose meets her after she is arrested for murder, he is charmed to let her escape with the promise of a night of passion with the tempestuous gypsy. Each meet with Carmen pulls Jose deeper into a passionate obsession that ultimately destroys everything around him. Told in flashback, the French writer Prosper questions and examines how a man of military honor could be twisted into murderous jealousy.
