Caro Diario, translated as Dear Diary from Italian, offers three glimpses into the life of director and producer Nanni Moretti. The semi-autobiographical film is made in a documentary style. In the first vignette, viewers follow Moretti on a journey through Rome on his Vespa as she gives her thoughts on Hollywood and Italian cinema, sociology and urbanism. Interspersed with his dialogue are shots of sweeping landscapes, iconic architecture and historic monuments. Next, viewers follow Moretti as he escapes the cramped city for isolation and tranquility on Panarea. Unfortunately, the peace and quiet he is after is disturbed by tourists, so he and his friend Gerardo move on to Salina island. Here children run free and Gerardo discovers television soap operas, much to Moretti's chagrin. In the final episode, Medici, or Doctor's, Moretti talks of the difficult diagnosis of a disease through multiple visits to doctors and specialists. Throughout the process, Moretti becomes more and more disillusioned with the medical profession. Moretti garnered the Best Director award at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival for the film.moreless
