Carrie, which is an adaptation of the classic novel Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, is a 1952 romantic drama directed by William Wyler. In order to get away from her boring life in the country, young Carrie Meeber (Jennifer Jones) leaves her father's house and moves into her sister Minnie's (Jacqueline deWit) small apartment in Chicago. Carrie must pay her sister's greedy husband five dollars each month for rent, but she is soon fired from her menial job as a seamstress. Rather than return home to the country, Carrie accepts the scandalous proposal of a lustful salesman named Drouet, who asks her to move in with him without getting married. While she is living with Drouet, she soon forms another romance with handsome restaurant manager George Hurstwood (Laurence Olivier). The two fall deeply in love, but their relationship quickly becomes complicated when Carrie discovers that her beloved Hurstwood is a married man.moreless
