Carrie is a 1952 drama directed by William Wyler. Carrie Meeber (Jennifer Jones) may come from a small town, but her ambitions and dreams are anything but small. She decides that Chicago is large enough to suit her needs and sets off alone to begin a new life. However, she feels disappointed to learn that the opportunities in the big city are not as grand as she hoped they would be. Instead Carrie winds up working at a shoe factory, undergoing long hours of grueling work for little pay. In desperation, Carrie decides to contact a stranger she met on the train, Charles Drouet (Eddie Albert). He is more than happy to help the beautiful young woman. Struggling with the humiliation of associating with Drouet for money, Carrie's life changes again when she meets George Hurstwood (Laurence Olivier), a wealthy restaurant owner. For him, it is love at first sight. As Carrie tries to balance her relationships with the two men and stay true to herself at the same time, she finds that it is difficult to achieve her dreams with compromise.moreless
