Carried Away is a romantic drama directed by Bruno Barreto. Joseph Svenden (Dennis Hopper) is a middle-aged, reserved school teacher who is unhappy with the path he has chosen in life. He has been in a relationship with his fiancee, Rosealee Hensen (Amy Irving), for many years but hesitates to actually marry her. He still lives with his mother (Julie Harris) in his childhood home and feels that he does not excel at anything in life. When Catherine Wheeler (Amy Locane) arrives in town, Joseph suddenly feels alive again. Although only 17-years-old, Catherine is a beautiful, sexually confident young woman who meets Joseph when she is assigned to his class. Facing a difficult home life, she turns to her teacher for comfort and support, and the two quickly begin an illicit romance. The situation becomes even more complicated when Catherine begins to dream of marrying her older teacher, and Joseph starts to doubt the wisdom of his decision to get involved with her.
