Carve Her Name with Pride is a 1958 British drama directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Virginia McKenna and Paul Scofield. The film is based on the true story of Violette Szabo and is based on the novel by R.J. Minney. Violette (Mckenna) is a young woman living in London during World War II. When she is introduced to a French Army officer named Etienne Szabo (Alain Saury) she immediately falls in love. The get married and have a daughter named Tania. When Etienne is killed while in battle, Violette joins the British Secret Service and agrees to become a spy. Her first mission to France is successful, but she quickly returns to England when her identity is discovered. On a second mission to France, she is captured by the Nazis and is tortured to for her secrets, but she refuses to betray the Allies. For her role as Violette, Virginia McKenna was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress.moreless
