Casbah is set in the famous citadel of Algiers where notorious jewel thief Pepe le Moko (Tony Martin) is hiding from French authorities. Algiers Police Commissioner Louvain (Thomas Gomez) is furious with Inspector Slimane (Peter Lorre) who is in charge of the Casbah district but also a friend to Pepe. Louvain hears of the thousands of bodyguards who will supposedly rescue Pepe from any attempt at arrest and determines subterfuge is the best way to catch the thief. He sends Carlo (Douglas Dick) in as an undercover agent. He soon makes contact with Pepe's girl friend Inez (Yvonne De Carlo). She suspects him immediately but Pepe recognizes him as an old prison buddy. A fateful encounter with the beautiful tourist Gabby (Marta Toren) seals his fate, however, and his love for her draws him from his sanctuary. Casbah was released in 1948 by Universal Pictures.
