Cast a Giant Shadow is a big-budget, action-adventure story directed and produced by Melville Shavelson. It is based on the life of Colonel Mickey Marcus (Kirk Douglas), set during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Mickey Marcus, an American Army officer, is recruited to help the fledgling nation of Israel to form an army. The Arab neighbors of Israel prepare to invade the nation as soon as they officially become one. Marcus accepts command of the Israeli Defense Force, just as war is about to begin. However, he is humiliated by the fact that he does not have full control of the operations and that many of his men do not have proper training or equipment. He soon realizes that he still needs to do his mission, and that the men under his command have the spirit and determination to make up for the lack of provisions. Flashbacks show Marcus' time during the Second World War, including parachuting into occupied France and organizing the relief mission for Dachau. Marcus also struggles with his Jewish roots throughout the events of the film. The movie has many famous actors, with some in minor roles, including the following: Yul Brynner as Asher Gonen, John Wayne as General Mike Randolph, Frank Sinatra as Vince Talmage, and Angie Dickinson as Emma Marcus.moreless
