Movie Summary

Robert Zemeckis
Cast Away is a 2000 drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film follows the story of FedEx systems analyst Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks). Cast Away's early scenes establish that Chuck has a demanding work schedule and is obsessed with time and efficiency. This often leads to problems in his personal life, particularly with his girlfriend, Kelly Frears (Helen Hunt). In one such situation, Chuck is forced to leave his family and friends during the holidays to solve a problem in Malaysia. However, the plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean during a severe storm. Chuck barely survives by clinging to a life raft and he ends up on a deserted island. He searches for inhabitants or other survivors, but soon realizes that he is alone. Chuck finds boxes that have washed up with some of the plane wreckage and attempts to make a fire. He not only fails, but badly cuts himself in the process, little does he know that he will have all the time on the island that he needs to master fire-making, and much more.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Stephen Holden

At its best, Cast Away, like "Titanic," awes us with its sheer oceanic sweep and its cosmic apprehension of human insignificance.

  • 70

    Variety Emanuel Levy

Meticulous, sumptuous production design, and striking visuals compensate for the lack of dramatic momentum in a film that arguably stretches narrative form to its limits.

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Comes off as convincing but never compelling. There's a ponderous quality to it, as if it's forever clearing its throat to say something of value that doesn't quite get articulated.
